Message from the Vaad HaKashrus of Metrowest
It has been brought to our attention that Shoprite Supermarkets are selling bags of carrots from Israel in the fresh produce section. The status of these carrots, as with most Israeli fruits and vegetables regarding Terumos and Maasros, is unknown. Therefore the Vaad advises these items should not be used without separating Terumos and Maasros first.
The process of separating Terumos and Maasros is not difficult. Step by step instructions can be found at http://www.ou.org/kosher/tithing.htm. It is advisable to check carrots that have already been purchased for their source as a number of consumers have already unknowingly purchased carrots without knowing the source. Other fruits and vegetables such as oranges, green peppers, red peppers, colored peppers, tomatoes, and other herbs are imported from Israel and are subject to taking Terumos and Maasros.
